Dr. Paul Calle of WCS works with Cuc Phuong TCC coordinator Bui Dang Phong to remove ticks from keeled box turtles (Pyxidea mouhotii) at the TCC. Pyxidea mouhotii held in the forest enclosures suffer from large numbers of ticks, while other species maintained in the area remain tick-free. One possible answer is that the area is too dry for the species, presenting optimum conditions for ticks to get a foothold. The TCC hopes to build a special enclosure for Pyxidea that would replicate the humid and moist forest conditions of the species’ natural habitat. |
