Hudson River Parks SUBMERGE Marine Science Festival
Held Saturday, May 18, on Pier 84 The interactive SUBMERGE science festival aims to bring marine science to life. The River Project team and regional STEM experts come together to inform and excite the public about NYCs coastal waters and wildlife. It was the secnd time NYTTS particpated in a SUBMERGE event. The Societys booth attracted enthusiastic crowds, who both admired and learned about several New York State turtle species, which included a Common Musk Turtle, a Common Snapping Turtle, Eastern Painted Turtles, a Diamondback Terrapin, and a North American Wood Turtle. Two exotic (non-native) species included Burmese Brown Tortoises and Alligator Snapping Turtles. Large shells of a Hawksbill Sea Turtle and an Alligator Snapping Turtle also fascinatied visitors. Turtle Society members Matt Hybel, Sara Ramos, Kathy Rumpler, Anita and Allen Salzberg, Frank Schneider, Barbara Torres, Larry Smith, and Jim Van Abbema fielded turtle questions for the kids, parents, and the general public, including tourists.
