ABSTRACT:  Podocnemis expansa and Podocnemis unifilis occur in sympatry throughout much of the Amazon basin, and both are highly exploited for their meat and eggs.  While P. unifilis has received much less research and conservation attention, it possesses a variety of life history traits that may ultimately make it easier to manage as a sustainable resource for local people.  This paper presents preliminary data from the first year of a study of P. unifilis nesting ecology in the Río Caquetá of the Colombian Amazon.  Results of artificial incubation and captive rearing studies also are presented.
