ABSTRACT:  The recovery of the desert tortoise, Gopherus (Xerobates) agassizii, will require a comprehensive conservation strategy that integrates the resources of government and industry with those of the nonprofit sector.  Accordingly, the Desert Tortoise Preserve Committee has developed an action plan to serve as a model for nonprofit organizations that includes three major categories of conservation programs: (1) habitat protection through land use regulation and/or direct acquisition; (2) habitat enhancement and stewardship, including establishment of management guidelines and monitoring procedures; and (3) programs designed to promote species recovery, including scientific research and public education.  Specific steps and recommendations, including examples from the Committee’s own experience, are outlined and discussed.
