Notes From the Field:
Viet Nam: Filling in the Gaps
                                   Images

The green tree viper, Trimeresurus cf. stejnegeri. This snake holds itself absolutely still for hours in a ready position, waiting for prey to come within striking distance. Green tree vipers eat small vertebrates—frogs, birds, small rodents—anything that comes within range. They have red tails that they may use as bait. Their fangs secrete venom that immediately immobilizes their prey. They will strike offensively when threatened, especially when cornered.
