Seated, left, is Ha Thi Thanh, a member of the Project’s Conservation Awareness Program staff, (CAP is our teaching program for local schools around the park).  On the right is Mai Thi Hoan, a ranger from Na Hang Nature Reserve, who is responsible for education programs at the protected area.  Seated in the background is Hoang Hai Ninh, another member of the CAP staff.  In this photo Thanh and Hoan are discussing the turtle lesson plan prior to its use in local schools.

“Educational turtles” used at the Project are not intentionally acquired for this purpose.  Rather, “mixed bags” have been received from the Ninh Binh rangers (including southern species for which translocation is not feasible).  These turtles are our “educational examples” and some are used in our visitor center (just completed) at the park.  They will also be used for training wildlife protection authorities to help them identify turtles in the trade.  Educational examples include Heosemys grandis, Hieremys annandalei, Malayemys subtrijuga, Siebenrockiella crassicollis, Sacalia quadriocellata, Ocadia sinensis, and Cuora amboinensis.  Except for Sacalia, all of these species are out of our geographic range (from the South).
