According to the new IUCN Red List for 2000, all of Vietnam’s tortoises and freshwater turtles are now to be regarded as "Threatened". While the 1996 Red List included only 13 threatened species native to Vietnam, international concern over the threat to Southeast Asian turtles resulting from trade and habitat loss has resulted in major changes in the conservation status of all of Vietnam’s turtle species. According to the 2000 Red List, three species are now listed as “Critically Endangered” (CR), while 11 other species are listed as “Endangered” (EN), seven species as “Vulnerable” (VU), and two species are listed as “Lower Risk” (LR).
