Herpetological Community Loses Well-Known Turtle Biologist

     J. Mike Goode, Curator of Reptiles at the Columbus Zoo, died in his sleep of a brain aneurism on the 20th of March, 1998.  He was 53.  He is survived by his wife Sharon, two sons, and two daughters. The International Herpetological Symposium 22nd Annual Meeting (1998), held in Cincinnati, Ohio, was dedicated to his memory.

     Mike presented two posters at the 1993 Purchase conference: “Eggs and Clutch Production of Captive Graptemys and “Reproduction in Captive Heosemys grandis.

     Mike started work at the Columbus Zoo in 1973 and was promoted to Curator of Reptiles in 1978.  Prior employment was at the Oklahoma Zoo.  He was well known throughout the herpetological community for the successful turtle breeding program he developed at the zoo.

     The Columbus Zoo has established a memorial fund in his name; donations will be applied to reptile conservation projects both nationally and internationally.  Checks made payable to the Columbus Zoo, with a memo specifying it for the Mike Goode Memorial Fund, may be sent to:
